Tristychius arcuatus Agassiz, 1837
Chondrichthyies
Elasmobranchii
Hybodontiformes
Early Carboniferous (Mississippian)
East Kirkton Limestone Fm (Visean)
Scotland, UK
Length: 0.6 m
This primitive shark had spines at the base of its two dorsal fins. The body was similar in shape to the modern dogfish sharks and Tristychius probably shared the same ecological niche, hunting small fish. Originally described from isolated spines, it is now known from complete specimens.
