The sailed Edaphosaurus was one of the earliest large herbivorous tetrapods, contemporary to the sailed predator Dimetrodon. Several species have been described ranging from the Late Carboniferous to the Early Permian and living in both North America and Europe. The type species Edaphosaurus pogonias had a longer skull with more robust spiny spines.
