Trematosaurids were gharial-like amphibians that were the dominant freshwater and marine predators of the Early Triassic period, but they were in rapid decline during the Late Triassic, probably outcompeted by archosaurs such as the phytosaurs. Hyperokynodon was the last known member of the family. It is only known from a fragmentary snout and a skull roof cast.
