Type Horizon and Locality: Middle Triassic, Grenzbitumenzone member, Besano Formaton (Anisian/Ladinian boundary) Monte San Giorgio, Switzerland
Type Specimen:
Mixosaurus ("Mixed lizard") was a medium size ichthyosaur from the Middle Triassic period. It had an elongated hypocercal caudal fin. Three species are currently recognized, two from the border between Switzerland and Northern Italy and one from China. The holotype species, M. cornalianus is known from multiple complete specimens.
