This ceratopsian is known from two right squamosal (cheek) bones collected on both sides of the Canada-US border (the holotype is from Montana, the referred specimen from Alberta). The generic name is a reference to the winged helmet of the Roman god Mercury evocative of the characteristic hatchet-shaped protrusions at the sides of the frill.
